Let's talk about Rick and Morty
Rick and Morty is a show that tells the tale of a rated r version of doc and Marty with portals and docs an alcoholic.They travel through alternate dimensions using these instead of time of course. The shows roots are deeply tied to the sc-fi and horror genres. Throughout the show they even throw in characters to make that even clearer such as Nosferatu, the Freddy Kruger knock off, and many others on their travels. However the shows main tell is that it can grasp onto the idea of cosmic horror, a genre pioneered by H.P Lovecraft, the genre emphasizes the terror of that which is outside of what we can even comprehend. I think that this genre is perfect for the nihilistic point of view of Rick and Morty because the entire idea relies on inverted what we know to believe, that humans are the center of attention, and changes to what if the universe just really doesn't give a damn about us. The show attempts to switch your take on being just a spec of dust in the long run and being depressed instead it wants you to laugh at the idea.
Rick and Morty begins having you question your existence is practically every episode. From their point of view you can say its shown through Rick and Jerry. While Jerry is ignorant, a failure, and unemployed, but hes simply just too dumb, he is overly oblivious the the pointlessness of his own existence. But in Jerry's ignorance he finds himself to be content and may even be better off than Rick because of this. While Rick may be smart it means he understand how insignificant any life is and the bleakness of existence. Ricks struggle with the lack of meaning defines him as a character. He goes through stages of passive and active nihilism. We are always left wondering what exactly makes Rick tick, and what if anything does he actually care about.
The show refuses to confront the line between good and evil, making you question where you stand morally and ethically. Morty acts as our moral compass, throughout the travels of him and rick he is forced to constantly question himself and his actions. He faces philosophical comprehension with every portal he enters. Morty is still just a kid so even though he see things that traumatize and cause him to breakdown, he has been completely denied a childhood and tries desperately to hold onto that until he can't any longer.
This show will have you believing you are smarter than everyone else and question every single part of your existence. Maybe you are in a simulation, maybe we are just all test subjects, our parents may not even be related to you. I'm just gonna say it, this show, will fuck everything you know up in the greatest way ever.
Overall it's a complete must watch in every way, the writing and animation are both fantastic and chalk full of ideas that i would of never even thought of.
