Let's Talk About Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, an American science fiction mixed with a romantic psychological drama. The film follow the couple, Clem, and Joel. The couple has erased each other from their memories only to start dating again. The film explores elements of a non linear narrative about romantic love mixed with the aspects of a psychological thriller.
The film is filled with symbolism specifically using Clem's hair to tell us where we are on the timeline through the non linear story. If we are using the order relevant to the actual time, we start with Clem's green hair showing off her bare roots. This green hair color represent something new and fresh when she first meets Joel, this color showcases that it's the beginning of something new, the birth of a relationship.
After the green we see Clem with her bright, red hair. This color represent the passion and honeymoon stage her and Joel are at in that moment. Showing us the happier days of their relationship. Overtime this feeling dulls along with her hair changing from fiery red into a color she calls agent orange. During the stages of this color we see the issues of their relationship being brought up front onto the surface, for example at the flea market when they argue about the idea of having children, and when she comes home late on Halloween after crashing Joel's car and he accuses her of cheating.
The color Blue bring us into more of a present stage of the film after they have both had their memories erased, representing a fresh beginning and blank slate. She called it Blue Ruin the name of a cheap gin and hinting at ruin you in general similar to the gin when it would hit your stomach. During her most intense moments including re meeting Joel and hearing the recordings before they erased their memories, both of them hearing how spiteful towards each other they once were.
Throughout the film we follow Joel attempting to forget Clem after he finds out she had erased in, during the procedure we see his struggle to hold on to at least one last memory and fight for it with all he can.
The films great, the writing, storytelling, cinematography, symbolism and cast blew me away and i would definitely take the time to check it out if you can.
