Let's Talk About Bojack Horseman's Philosophies

Bojack Horseman tell about the trappings of our daily lives and how we all search to find meaning in a meaningless reality while being cleverly disguised as a quirky animated T.v show based in the hollowness that is the film industry. The show follow the existential nihilistic and existential point of view of a not so successful anymore actor Bojack Horseman, the star of a hit T.v show Horsin around. Bojack is constantly going through a series of existential crisis and tries different methods to try and deal or cope with the issue.

Bojack tries to distract himself, he uses money and drugs to attempt to forget his hardships in the hollow film and T.v industry. Celebrities seem to have everything so why can so many never truly be happy, the answer is once you realize the meaningless and start to investigate and examine your purpose in life you have no choice but to distract yourself with useless task and things, that can only last so long until you are forced to end the distractions, cut the shit, and just accept your existence, return to your distractions, or in extreme cases commit suicide.

For some the idea of radical freedom is terrifying because it means you don't truly have a purpose you are, for all intensive purpose, just there. this leads me to the topic of Existentialism. In other words when essence proceeds existence.

We all want a purpose but the truth is that man is and always will be doomed to be free. There is no purpose to the existence of anyone, no exceptions, not even for Bojack or any other celebrity. You make your own destiny and have total control, a terrifying concept. You must embrace the absurd, this is the only way to really continue, the world isn't perfect. You can only continue to distract, accept, or refuse to accept and commit suicide. So in all reality the only really true way to keep on existing once you realize how meaningless and replaceable existence is, is to just accept, embrace, and move on.

You can have everything you wanted and still wish for what you don't. Bojack constantly tries to pretend he is happy while constantly dreaming of a life with attachment and have a family, a place to fit in. The show even goes farther on this idea to attempt to make you understand why some of the characters act the way they do through Bojack and his mother Beatrice's family. Both Beatrice and Bojack were raised in different eras with varying nuances, generational gaps, and societal norms that we can't even begin to understand. Bojack definitely says it best "all this time i thought you were a terrible parent, and you were, but i blew it even worse, turns out being a parent is impossible". A lot of the pain brought onto the characters are caused due to characters being unwilling to understand or talk to others and causes them to lash out and push your traumas onto others because they could never face their own past traumas.

The biggest issue in all of the characters life is that they don't want to face their past or the idea of existence in a whole. So they attempt to distract themselves in projects, things, drugs, and relationships to try desperately to ignore any of their own faults. All of the characters are deeply thought out and truly make you feel for them especially if you are watching it towards the age of when these types of thoughts are first coming to light.
